The Symposium Will Start In
The AfriGEO Symposium 2026
Theme: Earth Observations for a Resilient Africa
Date: 5th–8th October, 2026
Venue: Abuja, Nigeria
Overview
The AfriGEO Initiative is Africa’s continental platform for promoting Earth Observation (EO) applications to address environmental, social, and economic challenges. Over the past decade, AfriGEO Symposia have provided a forum for governments, academia, the private sector, and development partners to collaborate on issues including climate change, disaster risk reduction, food security, and urbanization.
Africa faces increasing challenges from climate variability, environmental degradation, urban expansion, and socio-economic pressures. Leveraging EO for resilient development enables timely monitoring, predictive analytics, and actionable insights for decision-makers.
Concept
The 10th AfriGEO Symposium aims to consolidate lessons learned and strengthen Africa’s collective capacity to leverage EO for resilience, in alignment with the AfriGEO Implementation Plan 2026–2036 and global frameworks such as the SDGs, Agenda 2063, and the GEO Post-2025 Strategy.
Hosting the symposium in Abuja, Nigeria, highlights NASRDA’s leadership in space science and EO, providing a platform for regional and global collaboration in Earth Intelligence, data-driven policy, and sustainable development solutions.
Objectives
- Promote operational use of EO data in policy and decision-making.
- Strengthen regional and international collaboration for EO applications.
- Showcase African-led innovations in geospatial technologies.
- Enhance capacity development in EO, AI, and data systems.
- Support implementation of SDGs, Agenda 2063, and GEO Post-2025 priorities.
Strategic Alignment
The symposium aligns with the AfriGEO Implementation Plan 2026–2036, advancing four core pillars:
- Capacity Development: Training and knowledge-sharing in EO, AI, and geospatial analytics.
- Data Systems: Promoting open data, interoperability, and best practices.
- Operational Services: Scalable EO applications across agriculture, climate, and urban planning.
- Policy Engagement: Supporting evidence-based decision-making and regional collaboration.
The symposium reinforces regional coordination and supports Africa’s long-term strategic use of Earth Observation for sustainable development.
